Man Charged After Stealing iPad From Woman At Mall, Breaking Into Long Island Home, Police Say

A Long Island man was charged with robbery and assault after allegedly attacking a woman leaving an Apple store for her package and then entering a nearby home to hide.

The incident began in Garden City around 2 p.m., Monday, Nov. 7 at the Roosevelt Field Mall located at 630 Old Country Road.

According to Nassau County Police detectives, a 63-year-old woman was leaving the Apple Store inside Roosevelt Field Mall when a man came up from behind and grabbed a shopping bag containing an Apple iPad.

The woman lost her balance after the attack and the man fled the mall on foot, police said.

Responding officers canvassed the area and located the man identified as Lloyd McKinley, age 22, of Hempstead, in the vicinity of Oak Street and Westbury Boulevard, police said.

Officers approached McKinley who threw the bag and fled on foot. Officers recovered the property and continued their pursuit. 

Police said that while chasing McKinley, officers were waved down by a 76-year-old man who told them about an unknown man entering his Warren Street home.

Officers entered the home and found who was arrested without incident.

An officer suffered injuries to his legs while pursuing the subject. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment and evaluation.

McKinley is charged with: 

  • Robbery
  • Assault
  • Burglary

He will be arraigned on Tuesday, Nov. 8 in Hempstead.
